Paestum is one of the great Greek archaeological sites of the Mediterranean, on the coastal plain of Campania about 40 kilometres south of Salerno. Founded around 600 BC by Greek colonists from Sybaris as Poseidonia, it preserves three monumental Doric temples — built roughly between 550 and 450 BC — that are among the best-preserved Greek temples in the world.
